our transport is cheap and considered good compared to many other countries. Not to mention we dont have "blackholes" - places that cannot be reached by public transport. So i think its well done. But of course the recent breakdown, we need to brushup on that

 no blackholes? u sure? have u been to HKG? Used their public transport?

SINGAPORE - Commuters faced delays on the Circle Line for more than three hours Tuesday (Sept 20) morning due to a track fault.

Responding to queries from The Straits Times, SMRT's vice-president for corporate information and communication Patrick Nathan said the fault occurred at a track point near Paya Lebar station, in the direction of MacPherson.

He said engineers were deployed to check on the fault immediately, and that it would be rectified after the morning peak as track access was required.

"For the safety of passengers, trains are travelling slower over the affected stretch. To ease congestion, some trains were turned around at Bartley Station in the direction of HarbourFront, and free bus services have been activated between Bishan and Paya Lebar Stations," Mr Nathan added.

"We apologise for the inconvenience.”

SMRT first tweeted at 6.57am, warning of an estimated five minutes additional travelling time from Paya Lebar to MacPherson stations towards HarbourFront.

It said at 7.06am that the fault had been cleared and train services were operating normally.

But barely 10 minutes later, another update said to expect five minutes of additional travelling time from Dhoby Ghaut to MacPherson stations.

This was revised to 10 minutes in a tweet at 7.34am, and to 15 minutes an hour later. Its latest update at 9.53am - nearly three hours after the fault occurred - said to expect an additional 10 minutes of travelling time from Dhoby Ghaut to Bishan.

Free regular bus service between Paya Lebar and Bishan was also made available, according to SMRT.

At the height of the delays, SMRT staff at Bishan station were overheard suggesting to commuters to take other MRT lines, such as the North-South Line, to get to Dhoby Ghaut.

Nanyang Junior College student Anna Lee, who was on the way to school with her friend, decided to wait near the gantries at Bishan station as the platform was too crowded.

"I don't think there's anything more SMRT can do now. They've managed the crowd well and people are quietly queuing," the 17-year-old added.

Mr Lim T.Y., who works in the construction industry as a project coordinator, told The Straits Times he was half an hour late for a site meeting in Sengkang. He had planned to take the Circle Line from Bishan to Serangoon before switching to the North East Line.

"The train is so crowded, how to board?" Mr Lim, 60, said in Mandarin. "It's terrible, these breakdowns happen so many times, and often during peak hours."

Twitter user @ohmym3l said the train had broken down and he was stuck at MacPherson station, while others complained of the fault disrupting their journeys.

Wonder if this is included in the context that our dear leader mentioned to expect disruption after disruption in the new world economy during the latest NATIONAL DAY SPEECH. Expect disruption .........And disruption being the new norm....... In the new world economic order ??

I was in the mrt when it first happened at about 6:50am this morning. Between paya lebar and MacPherson, the train was running very fast and all of the sudden jammed brake! Stopped in the between the 2 stations for about 10-15min.

Then out of nowhere a SMRT guy appeared and he walked to the beginning of the train. I think he could had manually guided the train to the next station. It was a jerky and very slow ride. Almost any crawling pace. Once reached MacPherson, I quickily got out and looked for other alternative. Trains on both sides were not moving.

Jerky for a while only. I think that's because it was manually operated so the driver was not used to it. About 1min later, it's was ok. No jerk but train was moving super slow.

I was so worried when the train first jammed brake cos I smell something burning!! So worry, what if the train caught fire in the tunnel and we were all trapped inside. Aiyoh. My heart went so fast. Hahah. Thank God, nothing bad happened.

Should buy from Germany Die Bahn or siemens. In recent years many japanese cars got safety problems. Prefer Mercedees or Volvo than Honda or Toyota.

The issue has been there for how many years already? People even fainted in the train over a massive breakdown in 2011. And then what happened? PAP still get voted as the ruling party elections after elections, and Minister of Transport still get paid millions upon millions year after year. Now then complain for what? If you are one of those who voted for the current ruling party, you go live with those problems. Don't come here and tell us how the train jerk here and jerk there, got problem here and gor problem there.

Posted

These issues has surfaced long ago. Over time, metal fatigue began to build up; and the only thing they do is temporary mirror repairs in order for the train to continue operating.

Such mirror repairs will not be costly. However, if they were to go into a major repair, they would have to consider that the follow days or weeks revenue may be affected. I'm sure most of us can tell that our "transport operator"'s main purpose is to generate revenue, and to them who cares about commuter's feelings.

The only way to make them pull up their socks is wait till someone decided to sue them and be award a lump sum. Then they will be scared that more commuters will do the same. Forcing them to shut down. HaHaHa.

Is this how our brilliant transport minister adminstrate our public transport system? Issues surfaced long ago and yet they have no plans to solve the root cause once and for all? Are they waiting something even more major and serious to happen?

Garhmen discourage car /bike ownership. Increased COE, petrol /gases up, parking charges, ERP......and come soon satellite ERP charges for every metre your vehicles move from your home...etc....advise public take Public transport, Go green...now...Circle lines / MRT always gets problems.....Total remain latent and silent over media news...

Are you satisfied like what this report says ? :

Satisfaction level up for MRT service: Survey

Despite reports of MRT service disruptions from time to time, consumers have grown more satisfied with the MRT as well as the overall land transport sector in the past year.

The MRT had a customer satisfaction score of 66.4 in the latest Customer Satisfaction Index from April to July.

This was up from its score of 62 for the same period last year.

In April, commuters taking the North-South Line suffered at least three service delays in the space of a week, including an April 25 disruption that affected services along three MRT lines and an LRT line.

"From the data, train reliability and helpfulness of staff were key drivers of quality," said Mr Chen Yongchang of the Institute of Service Excellence at Singapore Management University (ISES), which publishes the index, at a press conference yesterday.

"And for the operators, we do see them working in the right direction by trying to fix these issues through initiatives like adding more trains, (and) replacing the signals and sleepers," he said, adding that they had also stationed customer service officers at train stations during peak hours.

A total of 13,355 respondents were polled for the survey.

Overall, consumers were more satisfied with the land transport sector, which had a score of 66.8 out of 100, up from 63.3 last year.

Taxi services, for instance, scored 70, up from 65.9 last year.

For the first time this year, participants were asked to rate their satisfaction levels with land transport booking apps.

Uber ranked first with a score of 69.7, followed by Grab and ComfortDelGro.

"Given the recent increase in the availability and adoption of mobile apps within the land transport space, we found it timely to introduce, for the first time, a new sub-sector that tracks customer satisfaction in this area," said Ms Neeta Lachmandas, executive director of ISES.

She added that security and factors associated with ease of use of the apps were key factors in the perceived quality of the apps.

The study also found that customers have grown more satisfied with the air transport and public education sectors over the past year.

Changi Airport scored 81.4 points, up from 75.1 last year.

Customer satisfaction with budget airlines increased from a score of 68.3 last year to 69.5 this year, with tourists being more satisfied than local passengers.

Tourists cited factors they liked, such as cleanliness of the cabin, and food and beverage options, while local passengers were more concerned with the ability of the budget airline to accommodate their needs.

Also seeing an improvement was the public education sector, which improved from a score of 74.1 last year to 75.7 this year.

Meanwhile, postal services, represented by SingPost, saw a decline in customer satisfaction, from 71.5 last year to 67.9 this year.

Mr Chen said this was due to its lack of ability to meet customer expectations and a decline in quality

Sept 16

Late on Sept 16, train services were

halted on a six-station stretch of the EWL

, between Aljunied and Tanah Merah stations.

The disruption, which happened at about 11pm, was caused by a faulty component in the power system, Mr Lam said. This in turn caused a signalling failure.

Mr Lam said the faulty part has been isolated, and normal train service resumed on the morning of Sept 17.

Sept 14

At about 11.45am on Sept 14, a faulty train on the NSL

caused delays of up to 25 minutes

along a six-station stretch between Ang Mo Kio and Newton.

Passengers had to disembark before another train could move the faulty one away, thereby allowing service to resume, said Mr Lam.

Sept 2

On Sept 2, a faulty train

caused a 45-minute disruption

on a five-station stretch of the NSL.

At about 8.20pm, SMRT warned commuters to factor in an additional 25 minutes of travel time between Woodlands and Yishun stations.
