Hi

anybody can help with the identification of this plant which looks 跌树    but it has fragrant flowers which the actual 跌树 doesn’t ... I chanced upon it while I was in BKK walking some shophouses...

much appreciated!

Isn't therea App for identifying species of plants?

Probably because of the recent pattern of weather, the Iron 铁 trees in the neighborhood have been blooming with fragrant flowers.

we r all learning from one another sharing interesting stuff and cheap stuff like where to buy

eg this cat and all the stuff provided is sellg at 50 cents , gd for decorating your office space or even your residence! v cheap n cute (Don't be narrow minded to see this as a planting or gardening thread, I see this as a good site for buying gifts and décor , nowadays pp r into sustainability and organic stuff)

from what are some of the special rare trees of our UNESCO botanic gardens to xmas/CNY décor (u will be amazed how creative they r).........nature is beautiful

(the reason why I m at BW is cos I wanted to add value , helping the world better itself , not reading nonsensical stuff ie not beautiful)

another claimed that he is using clicked and grow type capsules hence he doesn't dare to share @ this thread cos all seemed expert

no1 is born an expert, the world is evolving constantly, hence we need good threads to learn new things (someone even complained that why certain postings are posted 24hrs around the clock cos this is a social media and no1 sleeps , we  have members in the group from other ctries contributing too n we welcome that)

we are all trying to help one another by gathering info , though easily one can google on his own but w certain narrow perspective or limitation

I trust we have gay students and pp working in the horticulture, they create this thread initially, they r also in the UF fb posting too , though very discrete and in the closet , can easily guess from their work and fb postings

BW mbrs who have qns here do state your location/culture, do note tht many in msia can afford their own land/space to plant directly onto land

but most sporeans could only do it by potting them
If  u have seen the video of this cny décor cost $800 (out of own pocket) planned mths ago, she considered the race and culture of neighbours before she started doing and yes she has already planned for next year's Year of Pig

i love plants and it’s just that the fragrance of the flowers caught my attention as it smell like a mixture of jasmine & tuberose( which both happen to be my favourite flowers)

i was surprised that the plant has flowers as I know it doesn’t flower mostly( I think there’s a Chinese phrase for it)

And a friend of mine was in Chinatown here saw the plant at a back lane flowered too but no fragrance so I’m intrigued

anyway, I’ll be in Bangkok next week... I’ll get that plant!

Yup

i do fly to BKK quite often... for work & leisure

Yup, the strict AVA rules... I understand as long as there’s no soil... but I’ll find out more

Tuberose is hardly found in Singapore; sometimes you can find them as cut flowers which I ever bought from Tiong Bahru market... it has similar sweet smell like hyacinth or narcissus but stronger fragrance

don't have to check, just rem no soil and left w the branch /stem and root will do

but it is not a big pot, just sneak it in

this is how some of us been doing it quietly

alternatively get it from sg or tbahru u mentioned, I trust u definitely can afford it

acclimatisation is impt

though it is bkk (similar to our temp, still q diff  , in the morning, bkk can be quite cold at times) and everytime a plant shift location esp  u need to remove all its soil even before reaching airpt , it has to suffer

eg the NZ flowers I sneaked in, changed colour upon reaching sg, cos v diff and the flight from NZ to sg is not short too (n yes I ddidnt even remove soil and do what crap to it)

Rem not to report me to ava

(the issue w sporeans is they followed rules and r afraid of the authorities)

so this time I’ll do it differently... I’ll hand carry it so I won’t ‘suffocate’ it... hee

I just love plants... just that the place I’m staying doesn’t have a spot of proper direct sunlight but I have 2 small bonsai at my window ledge(morning sun) with makeshift holder... heee

And there are so many plants I wish to grow...

Thank you for the nice things you said...

hope to catch glimpses of your bonsai....

oh whenever I sneaked in plants from overseas , I will handcary them (like how a woman carry a handbag) if not they will topple in the lugg(u wont know how the lugg will be thrown around, even if it is bring into cabin)

reason why I handcarry is sometime I will go to the airpt toilet and sprinkle water on the smuggled plant (pampering it as a baby)

next I will ensure that the plant able to survive long in sg (tropical) weather

eg the NZ (temperate ctry) one  I know it cant but it is just so cheap and who cares (anyway it is my very first time doing it so I don't care)

Is the cactus tree quite a large one like an A4 size?

Oh it’s a rather small one which I put in a plastic container with paper tissue for protection... the plant was ok for the first week then it went down the slope after that...

i personally had first hand experience with some one who actually bought a few orchids and packed in a carton and brought them back from Bangkok... I’m unable to find out whether the orchids ‘survived’ though...

but I was like ‘wow!’ when I saw the carton as one of the orchids had bloom longer than the length of the box!

assuming those are not baby orchids

when my HK aunt came over to sg, I brought her and mum to a large orchid farm in sg

She bought one pot for my mum, and we took cab to a restaurant

one branch  (of that orchid) was broken by my careless mum unknowingly

really don't know how those pp can pack in carton?? and none of the branch is fractured (esp orchids easily )?

Unless u r ref to cut flowers , even isetan or changi airpt do the carton pkgg for cut orchids ? but cant be cos u mentioned bloom

bTW, orchid did not use soil, they either is potted in charcoal or sphagnum mosses, so that is not soil

mum also sneaked in fruits from china, but I m not w her

separately on another tour, my china tour guide said fruits and etc are not allowed into sg customs (but no1 seemed to follow leh)

but that was a few years bacck

Yup

they’re potted full grown orchid plants with blooms... it’s amazing that they are ‘squeezed’ into a carton box

frankly, almost everyone of us went overseas will surely bring back all sorts of things... regardless what the rules are

for me, if I ever get stuck in the customs for any ‘illegal’ stuff(of course, not those extreme ones), I’ll dump it in the rubbish, no big deal... ;)

  • 2 weeks later...

if  it is  a bit , it is a good sign that that nature is working fine, they are not eating your fruits right? Check are there mealy bugs underneath, as it might be ants r sapping their fluid - an indication

but if it is a trail of army seen all the time, most will kill them, not sure why though (cos I have not seen ants not appearing in the env eg everywehere in sg bus stop there are ants, on beach or children playgrd)

old sch will say keep it then (this is how nature works)

but timids and the kiasees will say otherwise

Hello gardening enthusiasts

i noticed in one of my pots, there are lots of ants inside the soil. Mostly black coloured ants. The plant is doing well.

Is it common or is it something I need to take precaution?  Kindly advise.

Just take note that ants can protect honeydew-producing, sucking insects. These bugs do a great deal of damage. If you manage your ant populations, you will be closer to managing scale, mealybug, aphid, and whitefly populations in the garden. Just dont let the ant population get out of control!

What zi do for my backyard is that I apply sanitary, and chemical controls. Exclude ants in my garden by wrapping trunks or stems with a collar of heavy paper, surveyors tape, or fabric tree wrap. Then, I can apply a very sticky barrier like Tanglefoot to the paper, tape or fabric.

If not, you can always trim your plants so that they do not touch other plants or structures. Leave only a single access point so ants will have to climb the trunk to reach the foliage.

To keep ants out of my house, I caulk potential entry points, keep ant food sources (sweets and proteins) closed tightly, and limit their access to water. All in all, Keep it clean!

If its just one pot with ants, its still manageable now. Dont be misguided by just seemingly  positive side!

@FluteGuan thanks for your advise. So far I only see the ants in one pot and they will only appear when I dig into the soil. They are all within the pot ; or at least that my observation.

I will take not to make sure the pot is not touching any other structure. Will also start looking at some pesticides that handle ants too.

Hope I do not need to abandon the entire pot. Plant inside that pot is blooming! :frustrated:

Lol..  @bluerunner   . u mean me, issit?  i am @FluteGuan lah

I dont have other multiple nicks. Lol much

The ants should be deep inside your pot because they will be busy tunneling. That is the good part about the ants because it loosens the soil, which is better for irrigation,

Yes, do ensure the pots do not touch each other, at least the affected pot with ants,

You can use a mild pesticide, that will not endanger your bloom. Conversely, you can repot with new soil, if the ants bother you too much.

Have fun gardening,

I had a lot of fun planting bunga telang, the blue flowers that I use for making ice blue drinks. Lol much.used to have ants, but I have successfully repotted and do not have such issues anymore.

@FluteGuan lol. Thanks for pointing out I got the wrong “flute”.

I dun think re-potting is possible ‘cos the root is everywhere now. I may have to live w this issue if I cannot get ride of the ants. Some amount of ants within the pot I’m ok. I just need to make sure the ants do not form trails outside of the pot.

Lol @bluerunner no problem at all. Lol much.

If repotting is too much of a hassle, you can also try this.

around the areas of your pot (with ants), use those anti-ants chalk, or you can draw on the pot itself. That way, the ants wont be able to form a trail outside your pot.

If your bloom os not edible flowers or fruits, these chalk wont be a problem at all. Besides, you are using it externally, not in the pot itself,

Btw , some brands call it  Chinese chalk or miraculous chalk. Lol much,

When I was residing in Melbourne I was saddened to know that the ant chalk is toxic and banned from most Western nations. But guess what, it is still widely available via the internet  and Chinatown markets. In sg, you wont have a problem buying them from those sundry stores, like chinese provision shops.

I am just sharing from experience. Lol much. It is edifying to see fellow gardeners with green fingers!

it is normal to have ants, if there is no ants, Bluerunner

it is as good as the ecosystem is dead

usu I don't resort to killing them, no matter how organic the pesticide is

unless it is due to mealy bugs etc, the first thing is to check first

Oh yea, one more thing, nevermind what some experts may say.lol. theres no ntuc vouchers to be won here for the best answers. We are all learning. Lol much

"Ants in a houseplant are a sign that your plant has other problems, and that they’re going to get worse."

Well, there. @bluerunner , as Ive posted. If the ants are not too much of a hassle, and its not a houseplant, but a pot left in the garden, it's not a big deal. Lol much.

it is sad to see that even when discussing gardening one have to display her love for vouchers in a forum consistently

Members, do note that this is a thread on gardening, not a platform to do overcharacterisation of our own members

Tks! @bluerunner

for bringing up her many nicknames, she has more, in fact! Anyway, it is fine, no worries about multiple nicknames, everyone does that

to restart a day beautifully, look!

I had ants recently too in some of my potted plants, resulting in the plants' death. Upon investigation found ants and eggs and almost no roots in my dead plants. So my guess is maybe the ants had built and lay eggs causing the roots of my plants to die off slowly. So what may look like 'small' matters, it can grow to be 'BIG' issues.

I also tend to bring in my potted plants and give them a good shower once a while. Read somewhere that this may help drown what's not required inside the soil as well as bring in fresh oxygen to promote roots growing. Something to ponder about but do make sure there is good drainage first.

"shower" as in water deeply into the soil right?

"Shower" as in shower. Place pots in bathroom, turn on shower and let the plants get a good shower. The water will drain thru the soil and hence bring fresh oxygen into the soil at the same time drowning certain bugs.

I’m getting ants at my ‘Shui-mei’ bonsai and they seem to getting homey in the soil... Guess I should do the repotting?

u r back!?

so long the ants are not sapping anything due to mealybugs etc , abit of ants is fine, and there is no honey in the soil for their long survival
Try squeezing abit of Lemon/lime(if u r so uncomfy about the ants) and that will be enugh to keep them away

Repotting is only for drastic conditions like the whole pot is full of bad bugs, if not only when the roots are growing rapidly

Actually got my 'showering' of plants from bonsai caring method. They also suggest submerging pot into a pail of water if it is not too big pot. Btw just the pot. Am sure this will kill any ants and their descendants. Bonsai soil usually will drain off well. I used to water my bonsai this way.

Thank you

I guess it’s the flowers that attracted them as it’s not black ants... it’s those with lighter coloured body
