Cabin Crew / Flight Attendant Discussion (Singapore Based) - SIA, British Airway, Jetstar, etc (Compiled)

Recommended Posts

went to the recent walk in interview on saturday w/o harbouring much expectation and surprisingly, i got selected. passing rate was only around 3% so i must have been really lucky!

now i am pondering whether i should accept the job. it is really once in a lifetime experience but i do not see it as my lifelong career.

i am graduating with a bachelor's degree soon, any current or ex cabin crew care to advise?

Please take up the rare opportunity since the passing rate is around 3% only!

Please dun take up such jobs, no future and it does not add up to your working experience.

Singapore is cosmo enough, many jobs will require you to travel. Although you may not travel to certain places where SQ goes, but the crew, besides visiting airports and do a short cit- tour day trip, will not have sufficient time to see places in depth as many great destinations are far from the airport/city/capital.

For the first few yrs, u will definitely make more as a crew with over $3k monthly.

If u r not into the corporate world lifestyle, flying is a good choice.

about 10% perhaps.

Yes, when u r senior. But very unlikely as a Flight steward unless u have back to back 2 long flights within a month and your inflight allowance hit 2 and half times. Nevertheless easily more than $3k a month.

Yes.

I already said about 10% perhaps. how does it matter to u?

how long did u stay in the airline? that 10% was referring to % of degree holders.

matters to some extent as i think making some like-minded (gay crew) friends would be good, isn't it? :B)

it might be good. it might be bad. depends on how the friendship developed. most of the time if of same rank, rarely get to fly together unless change of flight.

10% i think he referring to would be the number of gays inside perhaps.

Those that are or were crew with SIA, do u come out to your colleagues or stay discreet? Are the crews tolerant of gays? I am still discreet and is joining the airline soon.

Guest flew and landed

well, a job that pays you to travel. and i would say that not very easy a job for the initial few months as the pressure to perform within the meal service periods is challenging. once you get the hang of it, it is just dishing out meal trays and getting ad-hoc orders ready for your ever-demanding passengers.

if you dont like the 9-to-5 office job, this jet-setting service job is a good choice as your work is just onboard the plane and once the plane lands, it is your rest time. shopping, sight-seeing and clubbing at different countries will add colours to your life.

having said the fun side, you must be able to save up and should you not like this flying lifestyle job, getting back to be grounded on land and to work in other industries, your glamourous days dont quite give you the due credits as, afterall, it is a 'waiter in the air' job. (:

Hi Ione2b,

I will encourage u to pursue your dream. What your cousin say might be true but it is not more painful than regret.

If you do not wish to regret in the future, pls try it out.

At least you have NO Regrets.

But first of all, be shortlisted first before you even think about taking up the job.

No disrespect for those working in budget airline - but if you really wanna fly, then may I suggest you join SQ? I mean it would be such a waste if you fly but don't get to see the world. Plus at least with SQ you don't get to have so many turnaround flights in one roster, therefore less tiring. Then again, maybe I am just biased.

SQ crew more educated so less nonsense with colleagues as compared to those budget airlines crew, dun flame me for that but its true.

Hmmm .... Interesting point here. Not too sure about the education bit, but i guess the training as well as the SQ-culture help somewhat, though personally I find some aspect of it sooooooo fake.

Hello, my sister is an SQ girl and from my perspective (based on what she and her friends tell me), I'm not an expert so please don't flame me. Just giving my two cents.

1) Most crew members are gay-friendly. A LOT of male cabin crew are gay, not all, but a significant number. Don't ask me for stats though.

2) The first two years are exciting and rewarding but you will be bored after that (sad but true)

3) After 5 years, if you quit at this point, they will give you a lump sum of money. It increases after every year.

I would highly encourage any of you to take up this job as you're young only once. Simply because you join SQ does not mean you have to fly for the rest of your life... Not everyone wants to fly for the rest of their lives and if you want to see the world and make a decent amount of money, this is your call.

As for my sister, she took up this job to save money to go to university overseas (after poly), and see the world at the same time. She's tired a lot though and she sometimes says she feels quite lonely on the job as the crew changes all the time. But our family's always there to skype her and support her. :)

Hope this helps...

I wanted to take on this job after I completed my studies.

Back then, there was a headcount freeze and so no interviews.

Plus I'm badly shortsighted so before doing so, I have to go for lasik first since I do not think contact lenses gonna work well for me in the air.

Ended up with another job.

Just feel a little regret (once again) after reading this thread.

So do pursue your dream especially when you are young!

    ~Say also Never Listen, Listen also Never Understand, Never Understand also Never Ask, Ask also Never Do, Do also Do Wrongly, Do Wrongly also Never Admit, Admit also Never Correct, Correct also Not Happy, Not Happy also Never Say~ ^_^  :o  ;)

Okay, this comes from an ex-SQ guy who has been there, done that, and even bought the t-shirt. Here's my euro's worth of perspective :

1) Most crew are gay-friendly, especially the fsses. A fairly high number ( if compare to other industry ) are gay. Did a SQ12 once, ended up me, the other gs, the chief and the ifs all aj haha. Fun flight though - ended up partying in West Hollywood :)

2) Had more fun before they abolished team flying. But yeah, after a while you do get jaded, and reporting for flight became a real bitch.

3) More work ( dang it 380!), slightly less offday ( no more 2days off after madras flight/ introduction of link COP)

But after what is said and done, the positives far outweigh the negatives I must say ...

Hope this helps :)

hi flexflexflex, are most ajs openly gay inside and do most crew know who and who are gay? how are the gays inside? are they the loud, bitchy, flamboyant, feminine sorts or it varies?

i am discreet and manly, not sure whether i will be able to fit inside. and im definitely not interested in the fsses. ;)

So here's the thing : Stop worrying wondering whether you could fit inside SQ - it's soooooooooo immaterial. You should worry more about whether you can perform on the job. Unless you were caught administering blowjobs in the galley or the toilet, nobody really cares of your sexuality. Guess they have other better things to do.

And yeah, like in any other industry, gays in SQ come in wild variety; I guess it's how you carry yourself that makes the difference. Personally, I don't gravitate to gays who are over the top flamboyant loud and proud. Or the overtly feminine.

True enough. So are most gays inside open about their sexuality? Are the straight stewards gay-friendly? And does the crew family know who and who are gay?

I hv received my training date already and am thinking of outing myself right from the start. Very tired of acting straight and lying that i have a gf. And i dun wanna attract stewardesses like what some friends hv told me about.

What kind of qualifications do you need and what kind of qualities are they looking for?

As for looks, I have a good looking face but am on the short side (1.62-1.64). I saw that male cabin crew have to be at least 1.65m tall? Any case of exceptions? Please advise me!

Actually the height itself is discriminating that is only allowed in Singapore, many other countries only go for same arm

length reach measurement for males and females but Singapore based airlines have dfferent height requirements for male and female . ! 1.62 for female and 1.65 m for male ,so much for double standard in the name of safety ! In fact, most 1.6m and above person can easily reach the overheard bins !

P/S : I guess airlines will recruit those X factor good looks and/or pleasant personality is an asset , not those good looking but arrogant ones !

I think at the very least you should have a Diploma or A Levels, unless the minimum of 5 "O" Levels passes still stand. And yeah 1.65m is unfortunately the minimum height requirement. This might sound sooooo cliche, but yeah, height DOES matter. The 380 galley compartments are wayyyy too high ( and deep) for shorty like me - retrieving things can be a real bitch :( Most of the time, I ended up using a melamine tray just so that I can get to the item or asking the taller fsses for help. Like, how ridiculous is that, right !!???

And contrary to popular beliefs, you don't have to know how to swim actually. They are looking out for your water-confidence, NOT how fast you can clock in your freestyle swim-sprint. I am a grade A super non-swimmer. Not a very good thing though coz every other year, I would be so stressed out just before my WET SEP knowing very well that I might be the only moron who would be struggling in the pool haha ..

As you go through a few rounds of interview, I think ( I am no expert here though) most likely these are the qualities they are looking for : service-centric, proactive, quick thinking, people person, humility, team-player, friendliness, eloquence or/and public speaking. One of my interview rounds ( this was years back) we had to actually went up the stage one by one to to talk about a topic that was randomly given to us half an hour before. It was soooo nerve wrecking I was literally shaking like leaves and almost pee in my pants !!! That was the worst job interview ever in my life. Like, ever !!!

I hope the above helps in your quest to be a cabin crew. And oh, on a side note - try not to work in those budget airlines - they just suck big time. .Maybe this is just my stupid male sorority mentality, but I reckon once an SQ boy, always an SQ boy :)

But I have friends who are at 1.6m who is working for international airlines and seen them having no problem reaching overhead lockers with their arm length , even with those SQ aircrafts, sorry, not to sound offensive ,but maybe your arm is shorter than those who might be shorter in height than you are and so why are girls recruited at 1.62m?are they not that safe as compared to guys when comes to safety, really contradicting as

always so happens in Singapore ? SQ boys do grow up or don't they ?

They are called overhead compartments - not lockers :) Anyway, I have never worked in any other airlines so I am not in a position to comment. But here's the thing, If you have been working in SQ 380 galleys ( be it JCL or EYCL) you'll definitely know what I meant. Those 1.6m guys will definitely find it a sure-fire hassle.

How about girls, why the different height standard then? and way before A380 was built and purchased ,they already have these different height requirements ?The safety aspect part was never answered well or never answered !

Different airlines name things differently. Overhead compartments are named by SQ, some foreign carriers call them overhead lockers.

TS, as far as I know, the min height requirement for male cabin crew for many airlines is 1.65m. You said yours is between 1.62-1.64m, but I guess it is still good to try if your height is at the higher range mentioned. Sometimes that 1cm may be mis-measured there and then by the assessor (err.... skilfully tip abit higher maybe) and I reckon you won't want to give up so easily without at least trying for it.

It is a nice job. Good luck!!

And SQ loves to discriminate ,the last time,a foreign girl said although age and height was not listed in her country ,they put a big circle in one of those column before she was being interviewed ,she was obviously rejected at the first round and she has gone on to become a successful model and part time actress since then !

height requirement or arm length reach requirement all boil down to the same purpose. discriminatory anot, this is the nature of a cabin crew job and airlines will not compromise on this. some other airlines use height requirement as well, SQ uses arm length reach requirement for their hong kong requirement. i guess its up to the airlines how they wanna do it.

SIA (>1.58m, >1.65m): http://www.singapore...ppointments.jsp

Emirates (212cm arm reach): https://www.emirates...quirements.aspx

MAS (>1.57m): http://www.malaysiaa...rs/join-us.html

Cathay (208cm arm reach): http://www.cathaypac...fa_requirements

Qantas (1.63m to 1.83m): http://www.flightatt...quirements.aspx

BA (1.58m to 1.85m)

like it anot, a cabin crew job places some emphasis on your physical appearance. there are many other jobs out there that focus on your abilities and not your appearances. being shorter does not mean that you can't perform, why not go for other jobs that focus and require your capabilities and abilities? :)

Had fun (repeatedly) with three SQ gays before. One was very fair, almost hairless down there and very little armpit hair. Told me that cabin crew do not do it with each other and are discreet.

Second one was rather bitchy type with funny temperament. But he was also a ballet dancer and was nice to see him do that tip-toe stance stark naked.

Third one liked to contour his eyebrows, goes to the gym often and finally hooked up with someone older that he met at a popular spa.

And there were other gay stewards I have met from other airlines. I am not with the airlines but travel a lot.

the crew (or ex crew) friends i have are not like the types that you mentioned though, most are good looking, straight acting and cant tell that they are gay.

and yes, i was told they are like a big family and any hanky panky will be spread fast among them, thats why most do not hook up with fellow colleagues.

So many stereotypes...

Male cabin crews are not all feminine, bitchy, flamboyant or what not... Lots of manly looking and "normal" (hate that word) looking guys. They are just discreet. Why would you have to scream it out loud that you're gay anyway.

I fly at least 2 or 3 times a month to other cities in Asia and I chatted with quite some FAs and they are nice and "just like us". Being in the media, marketing, entertainment, airline industries doesn't necessarily mean that you can just be out front gay. There just happens to be more of them there and people tend to be more open and accepting.

If that's your dream job, then go for it. Do it for 3 or 5 years, save some money to then do something else. They do earn quite more than any other fresh graduates I would say. But it's not an easy job. As I said, I fly so often and too many times I see these super demanding, difficult and angry passengers who just keep on calling the FA asking for this and that and complaining... It's a service job, so if you're not service oriented, it might not be for you. It takes quite a personality to be able to not take things personally and be willing and smiling when serving others. :thumb:

Kudos to them though for putting up with all those passengers!

I do have to say that SQ must be one of the Asian carriers that has the most male FAs (CX does too). I flew Korean Air, Asiana, ANA, Jet Airways, CX, Eva Air or China Airlines and they mostly have girls.

Don't even talk about European or American airlines... lol. They are famous to be flying aunties and uncles ^_^

Yeah common stereotype that gay stewards are loud and flamboyant, but actually a large no. of them are discreet and straight acting. I know cos my ex was an SQ steward :) and he's the manly sort. When i went to lunch gatherings with his steward friends last time, i was surprised some are actually aj cos i cant tell at all. Anyway you can save up quite abit in a few years, travel to alot of places and its a gd stepping stone if u wanna enter the hospitality industry. But alot of the blue ones (i was told the junior and younger ones) do not do it for long, just like my ex, it can be tiring and the turnover rate is high.

Dun bother being a steward, no future and its a job for the not-so-educated.

It is not a matter of being jealous, but there are so many jobs which you can takeup and requires you to fly all the time.

Only those whom are O-level and will never be sent out for overseas postings will want to be a steward.
