There's plastic surgery, you can train your bod, you can dress well... but alas, there is nothing you can do to your height...

In China, they have a surgery involving the breaking of the leg bones and pulling them apart. The bones will slowly grow to fill the gap. Just when the gap is about to be fused, it’s pulled apart again. A few cm may be added in this way. I gather it’s very painful and takes about half a year.

Sunday Times Hot Bod (19 August 2018)

Jay-Hykel Jailani, 25

Student

zGQQQZp.jpg

Height: 1.82m

Weight: 85kg

Exercise Regimen: I hit the gym about thrice a week for a lower, upper and full body workout each time. I do not like being in the gym for too long, usually 60 to 90 minutes. I am in rugby season now so it is mostly power and explosive work. I also have rugby training sessions in the evening thrice a week and I consider that the cardio part of my regimen.

Diet: I usually try to hit anywhere between 3,000 to 4,000 calories a day. I split my meals to six a day, or even two to three hours. I try to drink about a litre of water every couple of hours. I eat pretty much anything because I burn it off easily during rugby training. I just try to avoid any fast food, oily and processed food. Breakfast is always a three-egg omelette, 400ml of chocolate milk and an apple.

Robert Siswanto, 26

Business development manager & solution specialist

QiAQ14A.jpg

Height: 1.8m

Weight: 73kg

Exercise Regimen: I exercise every day (three days gym, one day cardio, repeat); two hours at the gym, with every session working on a different body part. A cardio workout is 30 minutes of running or swimming. I do ballroom dancing for leisure now, and am considering going back to taking part in competitions.

Diet: Most of the time I buy "mixed rice". As I live alone, it is quit a hassle to cook, so I do not have a strict diet. I avoid soft drinks and fast food. I generally do not like sweet stuff, unless it is ice cream for example. My favourite food is fried chicken - KFC original chicken especially, nasi padang, and whatever my mum cooks.

CCZiuuj.jpg

Height: 1.74m

Weight: 68kg

Exercise Regimen: I work out five times a week - weight, strength and endurance training thrice and cardio exercises, such as running and swimming, twice.

Diet: I have four meals daily, with at least two protein-based ones that include steamed chicken breast and pan-seared salmon, but no fried stuff. I have at least five pieces of almond daily and ensure sufficient water intake. I love cakes and pastries and allow myself to have ice cream once a week on cheat day. I do not compromise on food and compensate by increasing the intensity of my workout when necessary.

Height: 1.75m

Weight: 74kg

Exercise Regimen: I do weight training for two days, followed by one day when I do exercise like calisthenics or play basketball or swim for cardio exercise. Weight training consists of an upper-lower body split. A good combination of compound and isolation exercises maximises my efforts in the gym before I go to work in the morning.

Diet: I have a protein shake, two eggs and a cup of blueberries. For lunch, it is usually yong tau foo, chicken rice or grain bowls. Dinner may be salad, a chirashi bowl or steak. I avoid fast food, processed food and sweet drinks. The key is to eat in moderation. I occasionally indulge in desserts, acai bowls and bread.

Luqman Rahmad, 27

Fitness coach

DcuLDyp.jpg

Height: 1.68m

Weight: 63kg

Exercise Regimen: Three to four times a week, I do resistance training involving total body splits. I focus more on compound exercises which target the whole body - vertical presses and pulls one day and horizontal presses and pulls on another day. I usually add leg work, such as squats and dead lifts at the end of a workout. I play football regularly on weekends and try to squeeze in short runs of 2-4km every week.

Diet: I eat practically anything to fuel me up for the day and I am not strict on diet. If I'm going to be active for the next four to six hours, I would generally get more carbs in first. I never skip breakfast and would always make sure there is nutritional balance in my meals.

Fire and rescue officer

amMx6Ej.jpg

Height: 1.66m

Weight: 70kg

Exercise Regimen: I do weight training three to five days a week, run about 3-5km every three days and play various sports like basketball, badminton and rugby on weekends. Weight training consists of a push-pull-legs split for three days, followed by upper and lower body accessory exercises on days 4 and 5. This helps me keep my proportions while maintaining optimal performance in sports.

Diet: Rice and noodles are my main sources of carbohydrates, with beef, chicken and fish as my main sources of protein and fat. I also include a serving of various vegetables in every meal and drink at least 4 litres of water every day. This way, I get enough vitamins and minerals to keep my body healthy and strengthen my immune system. I enjoy good food but I don't indulge, and I avoid sweet drinks as much as I can.

Qei7SJf.jpg

Height: 1.70m

Weight: 66kg

Exercise Regimen: I head to the gym three times a week, each time training a different body part for an hour. I do weightlifting, bench presses and squats. I spend another three times a week on dragon-boat training. On Wednesday, it's land-based training, focusing on cardio exercises such as push-ups, leg raises, and running to build up endurance. On weekends, it's water training at Kallang River.

Diet: I don't eat processed food such as fast food or take alcohol. Instead, I prepare my own meals such as beef or chicken, vegetables and fruits, with a bit of rice. I also drink a lot of water every day. Once or twice a month, or on special occasions such as birthdays or weddings, I'll have a cheat meal, e.g. a slice of pizza.

Exercise Regimen: I work out daily for about one to two hours on weekdays and five to six hours on weekends. Training is usually running with a weighted vest, high-intensity interval training (HIIT) and strength and endurance exercises. I also take part in martial art fitness classes and practise boxing, muay thai, Brazailian jio-jitsu to enhance my self-defence. On weekends or days when I'm off, I do six back-to-back classes of HIIT, strength endurance, and martial art fitness.

Diet: I do not follow any particular diet but I try to eat less oily stuff. Once a week, I will indulge in food such as McDonald's, ice cream and potato chips. After that, I will be motivated to train harder to burn off that junk food.

KENNETH  SEET WENLEI, 28

Height: 1.69m

Weight: 68kg

If Mr Seet could turn back time, he reckoned he would have made more progress when he started weightlifting at the age of 20. He admitted to making many mistakes, such as lifting too many weights too often without tracking his progress and training only visible body parts like the chest and arms.

Now, Mr Seet dedicates an hour each day to training each body part.

His experience spurred him to become a certified personal trainer in 2016, to help others avoid such mistakes. He took this further by co-founding technology company, Levo Active, in May this year.

A smartphone app by the same name was launched at the same time to release personalised training programmes for the company's clients. These come with videos and instructions on how to perform exercises correctly. Levo Active also provides fitness services like personal training, online coaching, group fitness classes and boot camps.

Mr Seet said: "We know that people are not working out enough, and do not have access to convenient tools, engagement and guides to establish a habit of exercising regularly."

He has a double degree in accountancy and business from Nanyang Technological University.

His 27-year-old wife works in the aviation industry. They have no children.

Height: 1.85m

Weight: 84kg

Exercise Regimen: I focus on weight training but enjoy calisthenics and Olympic lifting. I try to keep my whole week active by mixing different workouts to keep things interesting and challenging.

Diet: I'm flexible, but prioritise carbs and protein in meals. I also increase the calories accordingly to the intensity of my workout. My mantra is to always enjoy life and not to be a slave to your diet.
