Kaohsiung worth a visit? Anyone been there? How’s the quality of men there compared to taipei?

It is nice place, quiet and cheap compared to Taipei.

I go cos my good friend is there.

If time is limited, you probably get more bang for your buck in Taipei.

Yup it is worth a visit, but men wise - i'd say the same or not as open, as it is not a glitzy city like Taipei.
It has a different feel, slightly more industrial and rural, without exactly being the countryside.

If you are into the arts, there is a thriving local arts scene. and the world's largest art facility/venue.

https://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2018/oct/19/national-kaohsiung-centre-for-the-arts-taiwan-review-a-260m-cultural-paradise?CMP=share_btn_fb

One word of caution though:

There are some parts of Kaohsiung that are not safe for solo tourists exploring. Kaohsiung has a bigger gang presence than Taipei, there are some cartels running the city at all time.

Due to the shipping port, and also distance away from the capital, they choose to operate from here. Some of the councilmen / small politicians are also known for their links to the criminal underground. The gangs run funeral, gambling and also shipping business, amongst others like trafficking, gun-running etc. They also have some connections to the Yakuza and illegal china markets.

So if you are in Kaohsiung, stay away from the gambling parlors, just exercise good caution and sensibility. They don't like tourists or locals coming round poking their noses into their business.

Anyway for a place outside of Taipei, I would say it is best explored with a local. They can bring you to all the best parts that is not in guidebooks or sites.

Visiting Taipei currently and thinking about hitting up Royal or Weipa.

There is some fresh blood at these spas that no one has commented on in this forum.

for example...

Royal:  Asa, Adam, Dean

Weipa:  Leo, Corey

anyone can share any experiences with the newbies?  Recent commentary on the more established folks also appreciated.  Thanks!

was at Taipei on Saturday during the LGBT parade, what a huge turn-out - the ximending night market was full of rainbows, eh-ve-ree-where! Was quite a sight to behold :D

Just back from short trip to Taipei, update that Huang Ding is still closed. And Kawayu Spa (Chuan Tang) is super quiet. The gay spillover went to Huang Chi. The lane closure is a slight inconvenience, but there are some road maps pasted along the street to guide you to Lane 300, from which you can enter the area where all the hot springs are located.

When I was at Huang Chi, easily more than 70% are gay. Variety of guys, from tall muscle hunks, gym bears, chubs, lean twinks to older men. Basically, there was some touching under the water and in the sauna rooms but it is all very very discreet.

The sauna rooms are wooden - there is a hot one at the far back of the space, and then another one that seems to be just for showering (?) nearer to the entrance, between the toilet and shower area. There was one chub stalking that 2nd sauna room so I chose not to enter. The hot sauna room actually has a sign saying gay hanky-panky will be reported to police haha. I don't think this is much of a deterrence though, but as mentioned, it is all very discreet.

In terms of timing, I was there on Sat and Sun, and both days mid afternoon around 2  to 4 sees the muscle hunk types - very very nice to look at. The sight of their bodies in the mist, jewels half concealed as they move in and out of the pool is worth the fuss alone. If you are also muscle/gym toned, you might get lucky and have a cute one sit beside you.

At around 5pm, the crowd gets more mixed. As usual, the gays comes in pairs or cliques, some older ones come solo. After dinner time, 6 onwards, some daddies with their kids also entered. At fullest capacity, I think there were about 50 to 60 men in there - there is a number waiting list if the place is too full.

For actual hot spring aficionados, the middle pool temperatures are 41, 42, 43 respectively. There is 1 jet spray pool (mid warmth), 1 soaking pool (mid warmth) and one cold plunge. There is also a shallow bath for one to lie down in. I saw a lot of sexy matured men lying down here and exhibiting themselves. This is the area where they recover their normal "little brother" size after being subjected to extreme hot and cold.

One matured daddy fell asleep (or fake sleep) and had a mid hardon pointing up, which definitely garnered a lot of attention. He kept pumping/squeezing his asshole, so his thing was bobbing up and down, eventually he covered with a small towel. But it was too late as he already had an audience. Suddenly, there were around 10 guys gathered near there to attend the flag raising, haha.

All in all, Huang Chi still pales in comparison next to Huang Ding. The latter could get very very raunchy depending on the clientele, and you can get actual action there if that is what you are seeking. Even if not action, there is a way more relaxed atmosphere at Huang Ding - it is not rare to have guys who come alone to strike conversations with each other, or to meet regulars there and have close chit chats. I've seen guys giving each other rubs and massages in Huang Ding, it is intimate without being sexual.

For Huang Chi, it is strictly for looking only, for now. Not sure how things will develop, but my gut feel is that the management will keep a close watch. The two uncles manning the lockers and changing area also do a strict job at keeping things moving, so you have like 5 mins tops to shower, get dressed, get your shoes on and go.

So total rating is 6/10. Good for variety of crowd, excellent jet sprays that actually work, but minus points for the "cleanliness".

I did still managed to meet a guy at Huang Chi, and also had some fun at XL Club gym. But as this is an official reporting on Huang Chi only, do let me know if I should share the rest as well.

Thanks for reading, and hope it helps anyone keen to visit!

I went to Huang Chi, not Huang Ding, as that has closed down.

Basically, once you enter the main area for hot springs from lane 300, look out for the yellow Huang Chi sign then, follow the arrows. You might be taken down the side stairs which is lined in a red handrail and bridge. But as long as you reach the main office above, it's fine. Even if you do somehow take the other road, just look out for the yellow signage.

It's not difficult to get to from the city - take train to Shipai Station, and just opp are a few busstops - Bus 508 will be the safest bet to get you up and down the mountain. If you miss the last bus which is ard 10.30pm or 11pm, can ask the office to call you a taxi back to Shipai Station.

I usually go trekking in Yang Ming Shan before coming down to the hot springs, so if you keen to do that, from the main Yang Ming Shan stop (opp 7-11 and Starbucks), take S8 bus. It's a nice treat to soak the tired muscles after trekking for a few hours.

I find Google Maps for buses quite reliable in Taipei, so some days when I feel lazt to walk to the station, there are always buses to take anyway, and they have a flat rate of NT15 - so do use that as a resource!

Have a good trip!

You are right, Google maps is quite reliable.... OK for route planning, but not great with timings.

Curious about Huang Chi, I have been a few times but never realised there were two saunas?!  I only know the one just before you reach the showers.

Where is the other one?

Did you go during the gay pride time? Heard there was a queue to enter then. I have not otherwise encountered staff members hurrying people along!

Yes for timing, give or take 5 mins. Once at the busstop, there is usually a display that lets you know in real time the ETA.

But yea buses can be a nice change to the subway, i think it brings a more local experience and also sometimes that whole going into a station and figuring which line to take, which direction to walk can be a bit taxing after a long day out. Also, the stations are close but not THAT close.

Each time I try to navigate a route with bus, I am able to get one straight bus that is just 5 mins away from my intended destination. It's like a game to see how fastest and easiest to travel, I tend to do that with Google Maps most countries I visit, haha.

The other sauna is further in - it is closest to the 43 deg pool, and its a light/blonde wood type cabin, while the other looks darker/perpetually wet. Maybe it is new?

I went the week after pride, but there was still a queue of about 15 mins. it's funny cos all the guys outside were obviously gay, and we were just waiting awkwardly, trying not to make eye contact and play with phone.

There is palpable anticipation cos we know in the next 10-15 mins, we would be seeing each other naked, hahaha

Great report, but I think you are wrong re the capacity. I was there on the evening before the Gay Pride Parade. I counted more than 100 guys. So I guess the capacity must be a little more than that. It seems there are not enough lockers as almost all were full and some guys just used open spaces to store their clothes. Most of the guys were youngish chubs that night.

Unfortunately the steam room at the far right as you enter the spring area was closed the evening I was there and I could not read the Chinese sign. I assumed it was a result of some maintenance problem as it has always been open on previous visits. I have occasionally seen the odd touching at the back but not much more goes on there.

I was there one day before the pride too (Friday). The steam room was initially functioning well when I entered (around 5:30), and there were overly huge amount of actions in the steam room, which I considered a bit too much and obvious for establishment like Huangchi. Then around 6 o'clock the management came to shut down the steam room all of a sudden, stating that there were some malfunctions. But obviously the steam room was functioning ok and most probably it was a result of some complaint from straight patrons. It remained shut down throughout the pride.

Man, it was already quite packed at the times I went. I don't think it would have been very enjoyable personally at more than 100. That is a bit much, and I'd feel a bit strange about being cooped up in the space, just staring at people next to you, with no room to relax.

I went in the sauna a few times and once saw a guy at the back, facing the wall. He was getting head from a guy who was kneeling on the floor. I thought it was cutting it a bit close, not worth getting caught.

The most I've had personally are guys who inch their way and stroke my thighs, butt etc under the water. I kept checking but the visibility was bad as the water was milky/murky so I proceeded within reason.

Once again, all pales in comparison to Huang Ding and that lower level sauna room.

Oh, thanks for sharing. So that means they only turned it back on after Pride Week. There were some fathers and kids, so as much as I welcome some fun, I also think it is disrespectful for foreigners and tourists to turn the hot spring into a lurid sex den. I always maintain that the locals use the hot spring as intended to relax and socialise, we must not take this away from them.

For a long time, Huang Chi has been more than an ordinary hot spring. It has been popular with local gays to relax, socialise, and maybe discreetly play. Activities go on there, Pride Week or not.....  I would guess that Taiwanese gays would far outnumber the tourists even during Pride.

I reckon they should just give up the pretense, and turn into a gay venue. Ha ha ha...

I did not go to Huang chi and went to the other hot spring resorts. Totally worth the soak.

Went to Royal Spa last night. Had booked Jacky but they didn't confirm. I ended up with Nilsson. Quite a sassy person, tight bums when he walked the stairs but the picture doesn't look like him. The real person is more kiddy. I like the picture as it is more mature looking. Overall the massage is very sensual. He allowed more than touching of him and HJ. When he is doing my back, i found that he had stripped off everything. He did used his lower parts of his body to massage me. He also do butt massage and he began to turn on than me.

Today i wanted to go Weipa spa and booked Cory as the pictures are yummy. But in the end couldn't go as i had company. So sad.

I did mention in a rundown of my previous visit to Huang Ding that it did serve as a refuge for those who are maybe closetted. Certainly, I met a few fathers and married men there, and struck conversations about their experience as a closet gay Taiwanese. Most are open, but also maybe because they know i am just visiting so there less risk of exposure. Indeed, there is a difference between the three major hot spring players, Chuan Tang and Huang Chi being the most discreet, and widely used by straight men, children and grandfathers. So now that Huang Ding is no more, the dynamics has changed. The local patrons at Huang Ding did share that sometimes the tourists behave badly and were too open with their hookups within Huang Ding, and has caused some problems in the past with management. Whether this is a minor or contributing factor to its closure, outside of the diplomatic reason that was released, I am sure many Taiwanese patrons are sad that Huang Ding is gone

Can I bring my mom and relatives to Huang Chi? I am not looking for anything just to enjoy soaking in the hot spring during winter time.

You can, but if they are female, they will have to stay in the women's only side. There might be a mixed section, but I am not aware of it. Hope they enjoy their visit, it is super nice in winter time!!

Hans is tucked into a small alley just behind The Red House complex. The alley is on your right off the main road behind a hotel and the entrance is only about 5 meters into the alley on your left. Go in and up the stairs. At the reception desk hand over NT$350 and get the key for your locker and a large towel. Find the locker, undress, put in your clothes etc. and then lock it. With the towel around your waist, walk through to the bathing area - at the other end of the floor from reception. Here you find a hot pool, about ten open showers, a small dark sauna and a larger very dark steam room. Quite a lot goes on in the steam room but it's often impossible to know who you are with - unless you quickly follow a guy you like and then with the door open note exactly where he moves to in the dark room. Don't be afraid of letting your hands wander. Usually your approach will be reciprocated.

Also on the ground floor is a large TV room showing regular movies with large recliner chairs. These are comfortable but it's dark and I'm never sure how clean they actually are.

Upstairs there are about 20 decent size private rooms with mattresses and duvets, 6 very small rooms, a longish dark maze and a TV playing western or Japanese porn. There is also a circular staircase leading to a small rooftop area.

Condoms and lube are sometimes available at the top of the first flight of stairs. But take your own to be sure.

The average crowd is more in their 30s, 40s and less in shape than 20s. Occasionally you will find students or some young guys who work nearby. Seems busiest on Friday evenings, Saturday afternoons and evenings - and sometime Sunday afternoons.

Lastly, although I have never been, I know from a 39-year old western friend that he has had a lot of success in Soi13 In. Loads of young Taiwan guys. I'm also told it's all-nude. Much more modern than the ageing Hans. Certainly well worth trying!

Thanks so much for the info. I would be keen to try soi13 as i have heard good things. But being in my 40s I don’t want to feel uncomfortable. Does anyone have any info on if soi13 would be ok for a average body white guy from australia.

As I mentioned in my post, my friend is 39, slimmish build and European. He has never had any difficulties hooking up in many visits to Soi13.  It's well worth trying - and don't be shy! Just go with the flow!

Handsome and hung should be a winning combination. You mentioned you are in your 40s......the only thing is... I am sure you know that many Asian guys are very well preserved, sometimes a Caucasian guy in his 40s can look like he is in his 60s to some Asian eyes.

My feeling is that Taiwanese guys are slightly less receptive to Western guys, compared to Singapore.

Wow that’s very blunt!! I definitely don’t look in my 60s but thanks for the advice. I have never really had any trouble in taiwan. Just never been toba sauna and want to try just making sure which would be the best and friendliest for an average built guy (not fat) but a bit solid. From what I’ve read maybe Hans will be the best bet. Oh well will see how I go when I’m there soon.

Yeah, I wouldn't want to encourage and get your expectations up. No matter where you go, it is always a mixed experience, sometimes it's bad, sometimes it's good.

It's all part of the hunt. Handsome guys are sometimes left alone, hung guys are often groped, but rarely made proper contact with, especially in Taiwan where language might be a barrier.

For that reason, I find the Taiwanese men are a bit more reserved, and initiate contact by nonchalant touch (if there is such a thing) - it is a low risk way of initiating i suppose.

I have had my cock grabbed or explored by some while at sauna or hot spring, and their face/eyes can be staring straight at the wall in front of them - no emotion or expression.

So even til today, it can be a bit hard to read the signals of the Taiwanese crowd because it can be quite minimal.

But I have also been to IO, Aniki, XL Club, where some patrons are more daring and that inspires the rest that have been hanging back to get more involved.

If you are gym toned, and looking for a unique experience, do try XL Club, where you can get a full body workout in the buff with other guys.
I was there twice and both times there were toned, musc guys, early 20s to mid 40s to play and interact with.

The whole experience is very titillating, until someone eventually breaks out into a boner.

thank you so much @tomcat & @auri. Informative enough. They probably will go for "裸汤" public onsen instead of private cabin “汤屋” since they had great experience in Japan before. But what I am concern about is would it be hanky panky stuff happens in female public onsen? ==

There are many many hot springs in the area, where there's hardly any hanky panky... I sort of don't understand why a straight man would choose to go to 皇池

I have seen a lot of less well preserved even bordering on chubby youngish guys in Taipei saunas over the last couple of decades! I agree that a lot of Taiwanese are not interested in westerners. I think that's fully understandable. But that still leaves a lot who are! I am a good bit older than Lingo, am certainly in less good shape, but have rarely had any problem, even now, in finding company in a sauna. Lingo, let go of your inhibitions. Try Hans and then however good or not so good your experience just go to Soi13. You won't regret it. But try not to look shy!

I have to agree with the last comment "let go of your inhibitions". I'm a Caucasian in late 60s, lean and gym fit. I had the best time in Soi13in over Pride weekend. Five anal in 3 hours. Look available. Act like a slut. Add a little flattery. Why would they waste their time looking for mister right when mr available is right there. You will have a good time. If they are not interested they will gently decline and you move on. Taiwanese are hot and adventurous.

guys

give the 2 following a miss - not worth the time & money

皇宫三温暖 - really rundown, ultrasound & cold pool has dry, only a "hot" pool that contains room temp pool, steam room is lukewarm, sauna has a stale smell

hans sauna - one lukewarm pool, some rooms have smell, otherwise pretty average
