Man jailed over racist remarks on sharonliew86 'parody' account

May 8, 2021

SINGAPORE — A man who posted racially insensitive comments online under the pseudonym "Sharon Liew" on Twitter was jailed for three weeks on Tuesday (8 June).

The court heard that Singaporean Zainal Abidin Shaiful Bahari had originally conceptualised the Twitter account “SharonLiew86” – with a profile photo of a Chinese woman – as a parody account with two friends.

The 35-year-old, then a senior director at a computer software company, pleaded guilty to two out of four counts of promoting enmity between different racial groups by committing acts prejudicial to the maintenance of racial harmony and which are likely to disturb public tranquillity, with the remaining two counts considered for his sentencing.

Zainal and the two friends, both 33-year-old Singaporeans, set up the account in July 2018. They chose a photo through a random Internet search for a Chinese woman, and used the name of a Chinese Singaporean.

According to the prosecution, the account was conceptualised as a parody account for racially insensitive Singaporeans, and posted satirical tweets. It garnered around 5,000 followers at one point. However the two friends stopped posting the tweets from early 2019, and Zainal took sole control of the account.

He then published multiple tweets that were racially offensive between October 2019 and April last year.

Alluded to Lee Kuan Yew book

According to his charges, Zainal made a post around 11 October 2019 belittling the Malay community. Among other things, he alluded to the book Lee Kuan Yew: Hard Truths to Keep Singapore Going and allegedly said, “Malay express is Chinese normals academic. Malay NA is Chinese normal technical Malay normal tech is ackcherly (sic) same as Assumption Cocation Institute (sic).”

Then on 25 March last year, he tweeted, “From long ago oreadi (sic) smart Chinese womans do social distancing inside MRT when we die die dont want to sit next to smelly a*******", using a racial slur to refer to Indians.

Zainal used the same slur on 17 April last year when he wrote on Twitter, “You don't know how to behave later a******* coronavirus catch you".

The tweet was circulated with at least 39 retweets, and it was shared at least 479 times. Zainal took down the tweet about half an hour after realising it was going viral, and was generating substantial negative responses.

However, the next day, Zainal insulted the pottu or bindi – a coloured dot worn on the centre of the forehead by Hindus with religious significance. He stated, "I thought Indian is oreadi (sic) very use to being target as they have sniper dot on forehead".

A member of the public lodged a police report about the tweet on 18 April.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Senthilkumaran Sabapathy sought four weeks' jail for Zainal, stating that it was aggravating that he had used a masked identity.

Married to a Chinese woman, son of mixed race

In mitigation, Zainal’s lawyer Sunil Sudheesan sought a three-week jail term for his client. He said his client was obviously “not a racist” but used the account as a “parody account”.

Unfortunately, people did not know the intention of certain tweets and forwarded them without the intention of Zainal, said the lawyer.

He said Zainal was “very sorry” for this and “should have anticipated this”.

He withdrew the most serious tweet after 20 minutes, said the lawyer, describing his client as a “good man” and asking for the judge to be merciful.

Sunil pointed out that Zainal was married to a Chinese woman, and their son was of mixed-race.

Apart from having racially diverse friends, Zainal also headed a racially diverse team and valued racial and cultural diversity, said Sunil, who added that his client wanted to raise his son in an inclusive environment.

District Judge Jennifer Marie said that offenders must realise callous and offensive remarks online had the potential to cause disorder, harming the peace and harmony in Singapore.

Zainal could have been jailed up to three years and given a fine, or both.

Stupid man. You are lucky you got away with a light sentence this time round probably because of your age. Hope you have not committed the crime after reading the fictional stories posted here.

Your friendship with your schoolmate is gone forever.  Hope you take time to reflect your actions and not do stupid things in future  cos  if you do, your next sentencing will not be that light anymore.

SINGAPORE - A student was given 30 months' probation on Wednesday (June 9) for molesting a schoolmate during a sleepover and filming a man in a campus gym toilet.

The 21-year-old, who cannot be named to protect the identity of the victims, pleaded guilty in February to one count each of molestation and voyeurism.

His first victim was a male schoolmate whom he met in 2017 when they both joined the school band.

They grew closer in 2018 after both became members of the band's executive committee.

On Aug 27, 2019, the victim had a sleepover at his friend's house, as they were supposed to report to school for a camp early the next day. Both slept on the same bed.

Some time the next morning, he pulled open the victim's pants and underwear to take a photo.

He also inserted his hand into the victim's underwear and molested him.

The victim later made a police report.

On the afternoon of Jan 13, 2020, the student was in a campus gym toilet when he heard someone showering.

He then placed his phone under the cubicle partition to film the man showering. But the man spotted the phone and shouted, which led the student to retract his phone.

He quickly left the cubicle and entered another one about four to five doors away, where he deleted the video clip before running out of the gym.

The victim made a police report shortly thereafter.

Investigations found that the student had made similar recordings before but deleted them.

As part of his probation requirements, the 21-year-old will also have to perform 150 hours of community service. His father was also ordered to sign a $5,000 bond to ensure his son's good behaviour.

No one here desire to help him? I want to help him unload again and again. I'll lie on the motorbike or against the car boot while he humps hard and fast, and kiss and touch him all over. I'll suck him dry.

That’s explored in JG Ballard’s novel Crash, and David Cronenberg’s controversial film adaptation of the same book.

I think the most viable  solution is to go for castration. It is to spare the old man from committing the crime again and anyone from becoming a victim again. Molestation is wrong regardless what age the offender is (except for minors below 12) and regardless the gender or age of the victims. It will scar the victim's life especially when the person is young.
😑

Elderly recalcitrant offender jailed for molesting 2, including child

SINGAPORE - An elderly recalcitrant offender, who has been in and out of jail since 2018 over multiple counts of molestation, is back behind bars for molesting two people, including an 11-year-old girl.

Poh Seng Khian, 86, who is also hard of hearing, had been sentenced to 18 weeks' jail last year for a similar offence.

He did not learn his lesson after his release and pleaded guilty on Wednesday (July 28) to two molestation charges. The Singaporean was then sentenced to 10 months' jail.

Poh, who was unrepresented, had earlier pleaded for the court to sentence him to a fine, adding: "I'm old and about to die."

He appeared in court on Wednesday in a wheelchair, but was not using one when he committed his latest offences.

He was sitting in bus service number 30 on Oct 23 last year when he targeted a 27-year-old woman, who was standing beside him.

Poh touched the victim's arm about five times and she shifted back slightly as she assumed that the touches were accidental.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Lim Woon Yee said: "In total, the accused touched (the woman) on her left bicep repeatedly for about 15 seconds, before he slowly got up from his seat with the help of his walking aid.

"After which, the accused stood on the small step near the victim while holding his walking aid in his left hand."

Poh then pretended to fall and used his hand to stroke her right inner thigh at around 1.30pm.

The woman grabbed his forearm and he apologised to her. She lodged a police report after she alighted.

At around 2.20pm on March 11, Poh boarded bus service number 98 and sat beside an 11-year-old girl.

He then placed the handle of his walking aid on her lap and molested her.

The shocked girl immediately shoved his hand away and removed the walking aid from her lap.

She got off the bus and told her mother about what had happened.

The woman took her daughter to Jurong Neighbourhood Police Post to lodge a report.

For molesting a child below 14 years old, an offender can be jailed for up to 10 years and caned. Poh cannot be caned as he is over 50 years old.

Just a reminder or warning to those who like to film others and those filming peeping toms!

17 weeks jail for filming sex acts. Is it worth the act???

Man filmed couple having sex in Bishan-Ang Mo Kio toilet twice

Wan Ting Koh

SINGAPORE — Upon seeing a couple enter a shower cubicle in a public toilet within Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park, a man climbed onto toilet fixtures in order to spy on them.

Kuppusamy Karthik, an India national, then recorded them having sex.

However, this was not the only time last year that Karthik intruded on their privacy.

Knowing that the couple frequented that particular public toilet at a certain time, he waited nearby in order to film them illicitly again. He spied on them on the third occasion.

Karthik, 36, was jailed 17 weeks on Monday (16 August) after he pleaded guilty to three charges of voyeurism, by intentionally recording victims in private acts without their consent. One of these charges involve him recording a girl using the toilet. Three charges of a similar nature were taken into consideration for his sentencing.

Spied from handicap cubicle

His lawyer, Kalaithasan Karuppaya, said that his client, a driver, was in the park just to relax when he decided to commit the offences.

On 28 October last year, between 5pm and 6pm, Karthik was near the Activity Lawn and Therapeutic Garden of Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park when he spotted the couple.

He saw them entering one of the shower cubicles in a public toilet located within the park. Curious to see what they were doing, he then decided to follow the pair, entering an adjacent handicap cubicle of the same toilet.

He then climbed onto the basin and mirror of the toilet, using a metal bar to maintain his grip. He gained a full view of the cubicle the couple were in, and saw that they were showering fully naked. When the pair had sex, Karthik recorded them in three videos, and took four to five photos.

Two days later, around the same time, Karthik waited in the same area of the park as he had observed that the duo would come by around that time.

He saw the couple entering a shower cubicle and used the same fixtures of the handicap toilet to spy on them again. He recorded the couple having sex again.

Recorded another woman using the toilet

On 19 November 2020, Karthik was again in the park when he went to the back of a different public handicap toilet located at around the Therapeutic Garden at around 11.42pm. He was not aware if there was someone in the toilet, but slid his phone in between the gaps of the metal grilles.

He recorded three videos of the inside of the handicap toilet. One of these videos captured an unknown female entering the toilet. The other two did not have anyone present.

At about 12.56am on 20 November, a 22-year-old man called the police after catching Karthik “looking at (his) girlfriend peeing”.

Karthik was arrested at around 3.35am and his phone was seized. The videos were deleted but were retrieved from his phone’s stored data as “thumbnails”.

For voyeurism, Karthik could have been jailed up to two years, or fined, or caned, or any combination of the penalties.

SINGAPORE - A woman who failed to wear a mask on numerous occasions at public places, including the Marina Bay Sands (MBS) integrated resort, admitted to her offences in a district court on Monday (Sept 6) and was sentenced to 16 weeks in jail.

Phoon Chiu Yoke, 54, who appeared via video link, was first charged last year after she failed to have a mask over her nose and mouth at Newton hawker centre between 7.20pm and 8pm on May 8, during the Covid-19 circuit breaker period.

She left Singapore for Britain soon after and returned to Singapore on June 28 last year.

The Singaporean then had to stay in a room at MBS under a 14-day stay-home notice. But she left the room between 8.07pm and 8.23pm on June 28.

After that, Phoon loitered around various places in the hotel and was not wearing a mask when she did so.

In May this year, she was captured on video not wearing a mask at MBS.

She committed similar offences at other places, including outside the State Courts building, between Dec 2 last year and May 24 this year.

Phoon was out on bail when she failed to wear a mask at the Mandarin Orchard Singapore hotel on June 25.

A month later, she was charged over this incident. Her bail of $12,000 was revoked and she was taken into custody.

First-time offenders who breach laws under the Covid-19 (Temporary Measures) Act can be jailed for up to six months and fined up to $10,000.

Repeat offenders can be jailed for up to a year and fined up to $20,000.

Some guys can really go the extra mile to date a woman...

Recently there was this Safe Distance Ambassador who stalked a lady every day...

Now this guy who "wanted to save a girl from her drug addiction" (my interpretation), he only forgot he works for the police force...  (Is there any Career Future program to retrain police officers to work as social workers???)

Police sergeant charged with corruptly soliciting relationship with woman

  • Published Sep 2, 2021, 10:25 am SGT

SINGAPORE - A police sergeant was on Thursday (Sept 2) charged with corruptly soliciting a romantic relationship from a woman in exchange for helping her when she got into trouble with the authorities.

Sean Teo, a 25-year-old Singaporean, faces one count of corruption, one under the Official Secrets Act (OSA) and another under the Computer Misuse Act.

On Nov 2, 2019, Teo had allegedly misused a computer belonging to the Singapore Police Force to obtain information about people who had been arrested in an operation that day.

He was not authorised to retrieve that data.

A month later, he is said to have sent a photograph relating to the same operation to a woman he was interested in. It is not clear if the woman was one of those arrested in the operation.

He then allegedly tried to persuade her to be in a relationship with him on the premise of helping her in her case with the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB).

The woman rejected his request.

Court documents did not state what the woman's case was with the CNB and how Teo was planning to help her. It is also unclear how they got to know each other.

In response to queries, the Singapore Police Force (SPF) said Teo has been suspended from service since Jan 3 last year.

“Officers of SPF are expected to uphold the law and maintain the highest standards of conduct and integrity,” the police said.

“Upon disclosure of the offence by Sergeant Sean Teo, SPF rendered full assistance to the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB) in their investigations.”

His case will be heard again on Sept 30.

In a statement on Thursday, the CPIB said it adopts a "strict zero-tolerance approach" towards corruption.

"CPIB will not hesitate to take firm action against offenders, including public officers who abuse their position of authority and tarnish the image of the public service," the bureau said.

If convicted of corruption, Teo can be fined up to $100,000, jailed for up to five years, or both.

Under the Computer Misuse Act, he can be jailed for up to two years and fined up to $5,000 on each charge.

An offence under the OSA carries a maximum sentence of $2,000 fine and two years' jail.

‘Talk to rich people nicely’: Two women fined for hurling degrading comments at NEA officer

By LOUISA TANG
Published SEPTEMBER 08, 2021

After being caught lighting up outside a designated smoking area in Orchard, Chee Kam Fah and Koh Lee Yen hurled abusive comments at an enforcement officer, asking her to “talk to rich people nicely” and calling her a “crazy girl”.

SINGAPORE — After being caught lighting up outside a designated smoking area in Orchard, Chee Kam Fah and Koh Lee Yen hurled abusive comments at an enforcement officer, asking her to “talk to rich people nicely” and calling her a “crazy girl”.

The Singaporean women, both aged 50, were each fined S$3,000 on Wednesday (Sept 😎 after pleading guilty to harassing a public servant.

The court heard the two friends were smoking outside Lucky Plaza mall along Orchard Road on the morning of Sept 21 last year.

Ms Asyikah Suri Kamsari, an auxiliary police officer appointed by the National Environment Agency as an enforcement officer, was carrying out her duties with a colleague when she spotted Chee and Koh smoking outside the designated area.

The officers approached them and asked for their particulars in order to issue a summons.

When Ms Asyikah was keying Chee’s details into her electronic handheld terminal, Chee retorted: “Your salary how much? One thousand only one month, I think.”

She also said: “Talk to rich people nicely, you’re a poor girl”, “I tell you, you careful walk fall down ah you… don’t bang to the car” and “So what, pay only what, I got money (expletive)”.

Koh followed suit, saying: “You shut up and ask for IC” and “You poor forever, you know or not?”

She also accused Ms Asyikah of being a” crazy girl” who did not earn enough to buy a pillow to cry into, and told her in Cantonese that she had no upbringing.

Chee then took out a S$1,000 note and waved it in front of the officer’s face, while Koh said she should just shut up and take the money.

Their actions were captured on Ms Asyikah’s body-worn camera.

State Prosecuting Officer Nasri Haron asked for a fine of between S$3,000 and S$4,000 for each woman. He told the court that the verbal abuse was “prolonged and calculated to insult and degrade the victim”, who was merely doing her job.

Both women, who did not have a lawyer, said in mitigation that they were under stress at the time.

Chee said through an interpreter that Ms Asyikah had “suddenly walked towards me, so at that point of time, my mind couldn’t get adjusted to the whole situation”.

She added that she was a businesswoman and the Covid-19 pandemic had been a stressful period for her.

When District Judge Jasbendar Kaur questioned Koh on why her friend had waved a S$1,000 note around, Koh said they had thought they could pay the summons on the spot. She claimed she had been caught discarding a cigarette before and paid a S$300 fine then.

She further alleged that there were two other men smoking outside the designated area but Ms Asyikah “let them go like that”.

“That’s why I used this type of language. I don’t like to use this type of language as well.”

The judge told them that stress did not excuse their behaviour.

They could have been fined up to S$5,000 or jailed for up to a year, or both.
